Hey Americans! Cut Your Saturday Mail Delivery

Postman delivering mailI am Canadian but I like to watch American television programs and I have the tv on right now. Instead of Anderson Cooper on CNN giggling hysterically because he accidentally made a reference to a body part or bodily function I am watching another commercial from the United States Postal Service imploring your country’s need for Saturday mail delivery to maintain the American way of life.

Who needs mail delivery on Saturday and why is your government paying for mailmen to brave snow, rain, heat and gloom of night to deliver mail on Saturdays? Why is your government paying for commercials to tell people that they need Saturday mail delivery?

You need the post office. Dropping basic mail delivery would hurt the lowest income people and penalize those who can’t afford internet and private couriers.  Grandmas couldn’t go to the mail box in hopes of finding a piece of art work from grandchildren who live far away through the woods and over the river.  Don’t do away with the mail but maybe a little belt tightening wouldn’t hurt?

I am tightening my personal belt to try and reduce my debt.  My personal debt is $18,800 and I am attempting to pay it quickly but cuts have to be made.  No Friday night pizza delivery for me would be about equivalent to the Postal Service cutting Saturday delivery for your country.  A cost saver but not something that will cure the problem . A step in the right direction.  Your national debt is equal to $53,207 for each of your almost 315 million citizens.

Why do I care about your American debt you may ask?  It is about more than just lame commercials interrupting my favourite programs.  I am worried that the things Americans count on, the good government programs and services, the humane services that prove you care and show that you are so much better than the cold and callous way the Chinese government treats their unimportant citizens will be lost if you can’t get your debt and spending under control.

If the debt continues to grow you will be forced to make drastic cuts and jeopardize the thin social safety net that is available for the average American.

If all of us facing budget issues can make cuts to things that aren’t important (like pizza delivery, Saturday mail and this big list of waste compiled by a Republican http://www.coburn.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?a=Files.Serve&File_id=77c257a6-adc8-4e38-87a5-85c86d7ed4a5 ) then there can be a stop to the rapidly increasing debt.

Don’t think the Canadian government is immune from debt and crazy spending.  Our Canadian debt is estimated at $17,445 per person for each of our 34.5 million people and I am strongly against the policies of our current Conservative prime minister.  If we can’t stop our debt then we will collapse under the weight of it. Both countries.  North and south of the 49th parallel.

You don’t always make the best decisions United States Postal Service.  If I had a good joke about Lance Armstrong I would insert it here. Take some advice from a neighbour and let Saturday delivery go.  You could set a good example for all the other government agencies and show them how to live within a budget and do a little belt tightening.  It would also mean less of your boring television commercials for me.
